Leak-Proof Wax Boxes

We produce durable wax corrugated packaging. It resists moisture and contains liquids in wet environments.
Some packaging applications require more than moisture resistance. When products are packed with ice, release liquids or move through consistently wet environments, the box may also need to help keep water and moisture contained throughout storage, handling and transportation. SCHCI provides leak-proof and leak-resistant wax corrugated boxes for demanding food, seafood, poultry, agricultural and commercial packaging applications. By combining appropriate corrugated construction, box design and wax treatment, SCHCI can develop packaging around the amount of water exposure, product weight, storage environment and transportation requirements of the application. Solutions can include:
  • Stock and custom box configurations
  • Custom printing
  • Multiple wax treatment methods, including highly water-resistant cascaded/saturated packaging
If you need a box that can withstand or contain moisture, provide SCHCI with details about your product. Tell us how much liquid the box will encounter and how you will store and ship the items. Our team will use this information to help you find a suitable solution.

When Moisture Resistance Isn't Enough

A wax-treated corrugated box may resist humidity, condensation, and external moisture much better than untreated corrugated packaging. But applications involving melting ice, product liquids or significant amounts of water create an additional demand: keeping moisture from weakening the box **and** keeping it from escaping the package. Understanding those conditions allows SCHCI to recommend a box construction and wax treatment based on how the packaging will actually be used, rather than a generic moisture-resistance rating. SCHCI develops leak-resistant and leak-proof wax corrugated packaging around factors including:
  • Product type, amount and source of moisture, and whether ice is used inside the package
  • Product weight, box dimensions and storage/refrigeration conditions
  • Transportation distance, stacking and the required level of leak resistance

Leak Resistance Is Also a Construction Question

A material that resists water may still fail to meet application requirements if the box configuration is incorrect. SCHCI treats packaging for wet environments as a complete system instead of focusing only on wax application. SCHCI also accounts for:
  • Box dimensions, seams and closures, and internal pressure from the contents
  • Reinforced corners and edges to help the box resist pressure and rough handling
  • Stacking loads, pallet configuration and handling methods
  • Refrigerated storage and transportation conditions

How SCHCI Creates More Water-Resistant Packaging

Leak resistance isn’t created by a single feature – it depends on the combination of corrugated board, wax treatment, box design, and the application’s requirements. SCHCI uses multiple wax application methods (wax impregnation, curtain coating and cascading/saturation) plus proprietary treatment configurations like Duo Wax Treatment, Rambo Lock Wax Barrier and Superior Five-Level Wax Treatment. Which one is appropriate depends on the amount of moisture involved, product weight, box design, and transportation requirements – not on selecting a treatment by name or wax level alone.

  • Cascading/saturation identified as SCHCI’s most water-resistant application method
  • Treatment selected according to the actual application, not assumed uniformly for every wet product
  • Combined with board construction and box design as a complete system, not treated as the only variable

Custom Leak-Proof Wax Boxes

Applications involving significant moisture often have requirements that aren’t well served by an off-the-shelf box. SCHCI can develop custom leak-resistant and leak-proof wax corrugated packaging around the product and operating environment, accounting for:
  • Product dimensions, weight, amount of liquid or ice, and required box size
  • Wax treatment, required water-resistance level, and storage/refrigeration conditions
  • Stacking, transportation distance, and custom printing/branding

Stock Wax Boxes for Wet Applications

Some applications can be served by an established stock wax box rather than a completely custom configuration. Businesses can review available configurations to determine whether an existing box meets their product, moisture, and transportation requirements.
  • Stock wax corrugated boxes across a range of dimensions, constructions, and applications
  • Custom alternatives available if a stock product is a good starting point but needs modification

Choosing a Leak-Proof or Leak-Resistant Box

The best packaging solution starts with understanding exactly what the box needs to withstand:

Where is the moisture coming from, and how much will be present?

Melting ice, product liquids, condensation, and humidity create different conditions – occasional condensation is very different from a seafood box holding several pounds of ice.

Does the box need to keep water out, keep water in, or both - and for how long?

Moisture resistance and liquid containment are related but distinct requirements, and duration of exposure matters as much as amount.

What are you packing, how heavy will it be, and how will it be stored and transported?

Product type, weight, refrigeration, and handling all shape the right combination of box design and wax treatment.

Support Beyond the Box

For businesses whose wet-application packaging needs extend into storage and distribution, SCHCI’s capabilities go beyond corrugated packaging. With manufacturing and warehousing operations in Houston, TX and Edison, NJ, SCHCI can support food, seafood, and agricultural businesses managing moisture-sensitive products through both packaging and logistics.

Leak-Proof Boxes by Application

Seafood

Fresh fish, shrimp, oysters, shellfish, and other seafood packed with ice can release a significant amount of water as the ice melts. A leaking seafood box can damage surrounding boxes, pallets, and the entire shipment, so water-resistant wax treatments and box designs that contain liquids are important.

Poultry & Meat

Chicken, turkey, and other poultry and meat products can have liquids from the product itself, condensation, and wet conditions during processing, refrigeration, and transportation. Packaging needs to resist moisture and contain liquids within the box.

Agricultural & Produce

Refrigeration, condensation, and humidity can create moisture problems that standard corrugated packaging cannot address, especially during extended cold storage or long-distance transportation for agricultural products and produce.

Leak-Proof Wax Box FAQs

What is a leak-proof wax box?

This is corrugated packaging made for uses that involve a lot of moisture or liquids. A wax treatment protects the cardboard from water damage. The box is built specifically to contain the contents required for the application.

Are all wax boxes leak-proof?

No. Wax treatment increases moisture and water resistance, but not every wax corrugated box is designed to contain liquids. Applications requiring leak resistance should be evaluated specifically for that purpose.

Can leak-proof boxes be used for seafood packed with ice?

Yes. The appropriate box depends on the seafood, amount of ice, product weight, and storage/transportation conditions.

Can SCHCI make custom leak-proof boxes, including custom printing?

Yes. SCHCI can develop custom wax corrugated packaging based on dimensions, weight, liquid exposure, wax treatment and transportation requirements, with custom printing available for qualifying applications.

Talk to SCHCI About Seafood Wax Packaging

When a package is exposed to significant amounts of water or needs to contain liquids, ordinary moisture resistance may not be enough. SCHCI provides leak-proof and leak-resistant wax corrugated boxes for seafood, poultry, meat, agricultural products and other demanding applications, combining specialized wax treatments, corrugated construction and custom box designs to address wet storage and transportation environments. Whether you’re packing seafood with ice, dealing with product liquids, or trying to solve an existing leakage problem, SCHCI can help evaluate your application.
